Day 9 Grant Presentation - Esther Overton - Melbourne

One more stop and why not “save the best for last”. From Erdi Plaza,
the ride group made its way back down the Sandridge Bridge for its last
Kilometre of the event. A short roll to Town Hall where Melbourne’s
Mayor John So and Esther Overton and her family were smiling and
waiting to welcome the K4K for its last stop and last grant award for
the event. Mayor So is no stranger to The John Maclean Foundation and
The K4K. He was on hand back in 2002 to welcome the inaugural K4K into
Melbourne for its final stop. But this time the guest of honour was
not Mayor So or John Maclean, it was Esther Overton.
Esther
is a competitive swimmer, who at 17 years old spends as much time in
the pool as she spends out of it, and that’s where JMF comes in. Esther
has limited use of her upper limbs and uses a power wheelchair to get
around each day. Through the support of The K4K and Les Erdi, we gave
Mayor So the honour of donating a $5,000 – state of the art – day chair
for Esther to use to, from and around the pool. Her day new day chair
replaces the one she had long since outgrown. Our aim in this donation
was to support Esther’s swimming aspirations by making it a little
easier for her to move around the pool deck. We are happy to report
she doesn’t need any help at all - once she’s in the pool!
