John Maclean is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest
athletes.Struck down by a truck while training for a triathlon in 1988
John has not let paraplegia get in the way of achieving what many
people thought to be impossible.
In 1995 John became the first wheelchair athlete to complete the
legendary Hawaii Ironman triathlon. His incredible efforts at Kona
between 1995 and 1997 saw him become the first Australian and only
wheelchair athlete to be inducted into the Hawaii Ironman Hall of Fame.
His name sits alongside the greatest athletes ever to participate in
the sport.
John was the first, and still only, wheelchair athlete to have swum
the English Channel when he completed the England to France crossing in
1998 in twelve hours and fifty five minutes. His feats of endurance and
courage are legendary and have seen him compete at the Olympic Games,
Paralympic Games, the Sydney to Hobart and the Molokai Challenge.
John established the John Maclean Foundation in Australia in 1998
and has raised over $1,000,000 for young Australians under the age of
18 who use wheelchairs. John's inspiration and financial support is
helping these great young Aussies realise that there are "only
possiblilities" in life.
